I was really happy to see that the newest Kindle natively supports .PDF files and immediately dove into the Users Guide to check out some details. A few things immediately sprang out to me.
-Text-to-Speech is not available for .PDF documents
-Notes/Highlights are not available for .PDF documents
-You can only search the metadata on .PDF documents
While these do not lessen my satisfaction at having .PDF, they may be overlooked by some folks when making informed purchasing decision when reviewing the Kindle DX. Some people will not be affected by either of these facts, since they will probably just use the bookmark format, but I’m a little concerned about Notes/Highlights. I was planning on using the DX for all of my technical documentation and reference books and I regularly make notes in the margins of those reference books. This is NOT a showstopper for me as I will probably just convert the books that I need to annotate or search, then bypass Amazon’s new fees by uploading myself.
I think the most damaging fact is the search. One of the great things about ebook-ing reference materials is the ability to do a FTS (full-text search), grab what you need and get back out without slogging thru a table of contents or index. That’s a bummer
So, if you are looking for TTS-think again. Those that need to annotate, check out my information on conversion and Amazon’s new fees.
I am still dissecting the User Guide so stay tuned.
