Mercy Thompson Series
I have been fighting against this series for a long time. I like my fantasy filled with elves, dragons and wizards–more Tolkien-esk so have been playing the snob on some of the fantasy set in an alternate contemporary world. And face it, there’s an awful lot of romance books that claim the fantasy genre just because they throw in a vampire or werewolf; and they ain’t all good.
I also have preferred my fantasy in a world that has been ‘built’. In the past, its seemed to me that world-building offers the author more opportunities to stretch and showcase their imagination as they make their own rules.
While I’ll continue to be careful in my choices, I will be a lot more open-minded in the future. The Mercy Thompson series is well-written, keeps to it’s own rules and while occasionally formulaic, the storyline rocks entertainingly along. I enjoyed every minute and was up way too late this weekend because I didn’t want to put them down.
Fans of Laurell Hamilton will find this series refreshingly (almost) sex-free while still adult enough in its relationships to be grown-up; there’s nothing YA about this series. Like Ms. Hamilton’s books, there are werewolves, fae and vampires, but the magic and magical folks in Mercy Thompson so far (as of this writing there are 4 in the series) have not broken the rules or done the 360s that some of the characters in the Anita Hamilton and Merry Gentry books have gone through. This book has more of the feel of the Elantra books (listed in My Favs).
For you series lovers, this is one of those series that will make you check for Ms. Briggs’ other books and automatically Pre-Order as new ones come up. I am left wanting much more and highly recommend it. I’m off to check out her Alpha & Omega books set in the same world, but can also recommend her Raven and Hurog duologies. Although there are three books for each series, the initial book of each one can be read as a stand-alone.
