Night Angel Series
(Updated 10/19/2009: Amazon is offering this trilogy as a bundle.)
I enjoyed this trilogy very much. I appreciate a meaty book, classic fantasy and a first-class concepts in world-building. This book gave me all of the above.
At times it moved a little slow, sometimes character development underwent a total unexplained 360 and at others the writing was not as polished as you could wish, but MAN what a great ride these books take you on!
As a Kindle fan, I look forward to many, many more books my Mr. Weeks, but I will definitely be reading this trilogy again.
There were some elements of the story that were inconsistent; they gave me the impression of actually hearing the author change his mind as the books progressed
and there are also some disconnects in the storyline – characters suddenly in love, loss of storyline focus and some too-tidy wrap-ups near the end, but the essence of the story was not overly marred. Other times there was a Belgariad feeling to some of the banter in the latter books–a little pithy and cutesy.
Despite all that, the character development and insights, the depth of the story and the writing overall makes this a very satisfying read (insert exclamation point here). If you like magical swords, combat, beautiful women, monstrous monsters and evil villains, this trilogy is for you. The characters are human based, no fairies, dragons or dwarves, but there is plenty of magic. There are great possibilities for future books in the Night Angel world because the main characters in the trilogy are confined for the most part to one ‘country’. The other countries mentioned have great potential as basis for additional stories. I recommend the trilogy for teens thru adults because of sex, sexual situations and profanity.
This is a big trilogy. Each book is over 600 pages and the last over 700. Despite that, the books don’t seem too wordy. For the most part, the writing flows, however I lost track of a character or too along the way, but easily recovered. At this point, I think that was more me than Mr. Weeks.
This was one of those trilogies that make you start reading slower because you don’t want it to end. I am truly happy to have discovered another new author.
